2G callback: CBI arrests Raja, ex-telecom secy and key aide
CBI on Wednesday arrested former telecom minister A Raja along with former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura on charges of taking bribes to allot 2G spectrum licences to companies of his choice including Swan and Unitech. Raja’s former personal secretary R K Chandolia was also arrested.

The former telecom minister, who was forced to resign after an audit report pegged the losses from the undervaluation of spectrum at Rs 1.76 lakh crore, has been accused of conspiring with the two officials to help certain companies garner the coveted licences cheap.

Raja and his officials have been charged with favouring 8 telecom firms, some of whom did not even fulfil the criteria laid down by the government.

They have been charged with plotting criminal conspiracy under section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 13(I) 13(2) and 13 (2D) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The arrests can help the agency satisfy Supreme Court’s queries about the progress of the probe into the spectrum scam. The top court, which is monitoring the investigation into the scam, is to hear the matter on February 10. It can also help the government better deal with Opposition’s attack on corruption. CBI sources said Raja was arrested for alleged misuse of first come-first served policy to favour telecom companies of his choice in the allocation of 2G spectrum licences.

FIRST-GEN LEARNERS’ HARD LESSONS
BCom Final Year Student Commits Suicide After Being Strip-Searched And Taunted On Suspicion Of Theft
Four faculty members, including the commerce department head, of a women’s college in Adyar were arrested on Wednesday and the institution closed indefinitely after third year BCom student K Divya (21) was found hanging in her hut in Urur-Olcott Kuppam on Tuesday evening. On Saturday last, the student of Dr MGR-Janaki Arts and Science College for Women in Adyar was allegedly stripsearched after a fellow student complained of losing money in class.

The police said the student told teachers she lost Rs 3,000 in class and an inquiry was conducted by department head R Jayalakshmi. More then four students, including Divya, were searched. She attended college on Monday and Tuesday and was found hanging by her saree on Tuesday evening. A few hours later, Divya’s family found her suicide note. “Teachers enquired with all students, but they treated me...” it trailed off. The police sent the body to the government hospital for postmortem examination and the letter to the forensic department.

The next morning, Divya’s family members, relatives and others protested at the college and dispersed after the police promised a thorough enquiry. Then, a team led by Sastri Nagar inspector K Gajapathi began investigation. “The teachers first refused but finally accepted that they stripped her in a separate room,” inspector Gajapathi told the Times of India.

Divya is the first-generation learner from a poor fishermen’s family. According to her mother K Santhi, she was inconsolable. “She said she had been treated badly like a criminal,” she said. Santhi said she had wanted to question the teachers who conducted the search but Divya refused to allow her to do so. “I couldn’t visit the college the day after the incident or I may have saved her. She was afraid of lodging a complaint because of her forthcoming exams,” said Santhi, 50, who became the fivemember family’s breadwinner after her husband M Kanakalingam was rendered invalid by severe joint pain.
