Two dalit sisters burnt alive by mob

Food for thought
"The Untouchables should bear in mind two things. Firstly, that it is futile to expect the Hindu religion to perform the mission of bringing about social justice. Such a task may be performed by Islam, Christianity, or Buddhism. The Hindu religion is itself the embodiment of inequity and injustice to the Untouchables. For it, to preach the gospel of justice is to go against its own being. To hope for this is to hope for a miracle. Secondly, assuming that this was a task which Hinduism was fitted to perform, it would be impossible for it to perform. The social barrier between them and the Hindus is much greater than the barrier between the Hindus and their men. Religion, however efficacious it may be within a community or a nation, is quite powerless to break these barriers and (make) them one whole"-Babasaheb Dr.B.R.Ambedkar.

DOUBLE MURDER
Two sisters belonging to the Dalit community were allegedly burnt alive in Kothiwal Nagar here by a mob protesting a double murder for which their brother was accused, police said on Sunday.

“An FIR has been registered in which the victim girls’ mother has identified 12 people who were part of the mob,” SP Rahul Yadavendra said.

According to the victims’ mother Rajo, a mob gathered outside their house on Saturday and set it ablaze. While she escaped unhurt, her daughters Gita (22) and Monu (20) were burnt alive in the ensuing fire.

The victims’ brother Rakesh, who worked as a sweeper, has been accused in the case of the murder of a woman and her 10-year-old daughter for robbery on December 9. While Rakesh is absconding, his brother Rajesh was arrested by police.

Rajo has alleged that a mob had also gathered outside her house and threatened to set it ablaze about two days after the double murder.

She claimed she had requested the police to provide security at her house or to place her and her two daughters at a secure location as there was a threat to their life, but the police did not help.

DIG Ashok Kumar had earlier denied the involvement of a mob in the incident and had said that prima facie, it was a case of accident or suicide.

Rajo also alleged that the police had initially refused to register her complaint in this connection, while the DIG had claimed that police was not approached by her.

Dalit activists on Sunday staged protest demonstrations and took out a march from Ambedkar Park here to the place where the bodies have been kept for post mortem. They are demanding that the accused be arrested immediately.
