SC/ST victims of atrocities to get higher compensation

New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI) Members of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities who face atrocities will now get a compensation 150 per cent more than the present range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 2,50,000.

The decision to increase the compensation to the range of Rs 50,000 - Rs 5,00,000 was announced by the government today.

Welcoming the decision, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik told PTI that the government is committed for development of most disadvantaged sections of the society.

"The rules about grant of relief amount to the victims were not amended since its initiation. The demand to increase the compensation money was overdue and it is a welcome measure," Wasnik said.

The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, Prevention of Atrocities Rules were introduced by the government in December last year, a senior Ministry official said.

As per the new amendment, the existing rate of compensation which was between Rs 20,000 to Rs 2,50,000 for SC/ST victims of atrocities or their family members and dependents has been increased to the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,00,000, they added.

The compensation money paid to the members of SC/ST community or their family members and dependents increases with the nature of atrocities inflicted upon them, officials said.

This is the first time the government has raised the scale of compensation under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, which was laid down in 1995. .
