Tiruchi ‘untouchability’ wall removed
A controversial wall, allegedly built to deny dalits easy access to their homes from the Tiruchi-Madurai highway, was partially demolished by corporation officials in Tiruchi on Thursday. The wall, built about 20 years ago across Muthumariamman Koil Street in Edamalaipattiputhur, had forced dalits in the locality to take a circuitous route. The issue was brought to light by the CPM through petitions to the state government and later by a protest demanding demolition . On Thursday morning, corporation officials visited the spot and ordered removal of the structure.
